How a computer works
Today I'll be explaining how a computer works.
The computer is not a magical box filled with cables and metal. It is far more than that.
It is made up out of different components, mainly being:
- Motherboard
- CPU
- GPU
- PSU
- HDD
- RAM
The motherboard is a big PCB that houses all the other components, either with slots or with cables.
The CPU (Central Processing Unit) is basicly a small chip that does mathematical functions and takes care of all the transportation of data. It is usually fitted with a cooler on top because they produce a lot of heat.
The GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) is a chip usually mounted on a PCI card. In the old days that used to be an AGP card. Some computers also have a GPU built into the motherboard, but the PCI solutions offer tons more processing power and are mostly used for games and designing.
The PSU (Power Supply Unit) is as you might've guessed, the power brick. It has a lot of cables and it powers all your components.
The HDD (Hard Disk Drive) is what stores your data (Pictures, movies, windows). It is a spinning drive that can store billions of bits.
The RAM (Random Access Memory) is what is used for fast transportation of data. Due to the physical limits of a spinning drive (the HDD), sometimes data can not be read fast enough. So the HDD first sends the data it needs to work to the RAM, where it is stored for fast access, since RAM is Flash storage, meaning it doesn't spin at all.$
